Working While Working, 2018,
Xchanges Gallery, Victoria BC
Just as the mundane actions of our daily lives hide the personal tectonics of our internal emotional lives, in Working While Working, the sublime beauty of the Pacific North West is tempered by our regional fears surrounding an impending seismic event.
A filmed performance of on-the-clock labour by the artist is paired respectively with music by local folk artist Cosy Father, and autobiographical monologue by German Ocampo Salazar describing a memory of living through an earthquake as a child in Columbia. These audio components are available through four different sets of colour coded wireless headphones. Visitors are invited to attend their own unique iteration of the show through non-harmonized audio and video components that replace fixed narrative readings with synchronistic occurrences.
Evoking the the transformative potential of both physical and emotional work, this installation celebrates the dramatic retelling of internal personal struggles.
