Born of French Canadian, Icelandic and Dutch ancestry and raised in Lekwungen territory, Victoria BC, Nicholas Vandergugten is a multidisciplinary artist working in oil painting, printmaking and digital media.
Vandergugten's practice considers, among other things, the everyday conflict between personal needs and personal desires, and the internal battle inherent in having to choose between the two.
Past activities include co-facilitating youth workshops focused on art and social action with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and enjoying a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Leightons' Colony.
Upcoming shows include: a video and sculpture installation at the Odeon Alley Window Gallery in April 2018; an exhibitions of video based work at Xchanges Gallery as well as Flux gallery in June 2018, and an ongoing painting project in partnership with Victoria BC's Ministry of Health, exploring portraiture of the modern civil servant. All galleries are in Victoria, BC.
